Clerics of Dyeus Phater, Part II

Examples of Magical Side-Effects & Emphases
The Sky Father can be seen in various ways.
  • If a cleric of Dyeus Phater's emphasis is Lead Your People to Greatness, then his magical side-effect result #1 could be:

     1. Lead Your People to Greatness and No Other
: Following any other god besides Dyeus Phater is no option. Unless the recipient specifically follows Dyeus Phater and at least respects leading your people to greatness, no magic occurs if the spell would be beneficial. If not, then it should work very well.

  • On the other hand, if his emphasis was the Sky Itself, then magical side-effect results #6-8 would be:

    6-8. Standard Casting
: The magic works without side-effect. The sky itself might be illuminated too (a 33% chance).

  • Having Expanding Your Seed, Helping Your Children Take New Lands could result in:
    12. Blessing of Expanding Your Seed
Thanks to Dyeus Phater, the magic works for double the effect, range, or duration, along with it not being expended so it can be cast again that day. Even more, if it’s meant to assist the target, he allows them to be able to detect what would help them excel at helping your children take new lands within 60’ and also grants a +2 bonus to all rolls if following that emphasis for the next 1d2 hours.

Emphasis

Select or roll d12.
1. Lead Your People to Greatness
2. Everything for Your People, Nothing for Others
3. Honor Those Who Came Before, Perpetuating Traditional Ways
4. Expand Your Seed, Helping Your Children Take New Lands
5. Further the Sacred Against Chaos
6. Only True Men Can Do This, Patriarchy (Wedh)
7. The Daylight Sky (Deywos)
8. Winds (Hwento)
9. The Open Steppe, Horses (Ekwos)
10. Sacrifice, Sacred Cattle (Gwows)
11. Conquest, the Wheel (Kwekwlo)
12. Father of the Gods: prosperity, fertility, law, or weather

Divine Tests

The Sky Father encourages his people to ascend to heights of his own.

1-6: What have you done? The cleric suffers a -1d4 penalty to his rolls when attempting to do something related to his emphasis for the next 1d12 hours.
  • For example, if the cleric's emphasis is Lead Your People to Greatness, then he may suffer a -3 penalty to all rolls while doing such things as being near the front of his group or when issuing commands for 7 hours. In another case, if it is The Daylight Sky itself, then he could experience the penalty when under it instead.

7-11
: The cleric loses access to his spells and/or turn ability (a 50% chance for each one) until he does something to espouse his emphasis for them individually.
  • If the cleric's emphases are Everything for Your People, Nothing for Others, as well as Honoring Those Who Came Before, then 2 of his spells and turn ability could be lost, only to be used again after he does something to support the former. Another 1 of his spells might return only when he does the latter. The Referee may have him attack a rival group and spend time at a burial mound in order to be able to use them again.

12-16
: Be changed in an unfortunate way based on the cleric's emphasis for 1d12 days. Three ability scores will be adversely affected by 1d3, one will be improved by 1d3, and the test will be obvious to others.
  • With an emphasis of Expand Your Seed, then the cleric might become priapic, gaining +2 CHA, but lose -3 DEX, -1 INT, and -1 WIS for 5 days. In another case, if it were Honor Those Who Came Before, he might become old and wizened, experiencing +1 WIS, but also -3 STR, -2 CON, and -3 DEX for 3 days.

17+ Immediately undergo a major test, risking great harm or absence. If the cleric doesn't begin it within 1d6 days, it will happen on its own. Roll 1d3.
[1] Go on a quest to a place that reflects his emphasis for 1d3 days per divine test result over 16.
[2] Battle a dangerous being with a HD equal to the divine test result that either represents his emphasis or goes against it (an equal chance of each).
[3] Defeat a number of those who defy his emphasis, equal to the test result.
  • Having the Sacred Against Chaos as an emphasis and a divine test result of 18 might lead to:
[1] Journeying to a sacred land for 4 days.
[2] Fighting either a sacred or chaotic monster with a HD of 18.
[3] Slay or otherwise dispose of 18 chaotic-types.

Proto Indo-European Fighter-Clerics
Fitting for martial and leader divinities, such as the Sky Father, they combine both classes, even doing so if they are aging patriarchs.

  • Treat them as fighters (using their bonus to hit, HD, and saves), except that they gain no fighter special abilities.
  • In return, they know and can cast 1 spell of their divinity per day for each level that a cleric of equal level could cast. For example, a 3rd level fighter-cleric of Dyeus Phater could cast one 1st and one 2nd level spell from his list each day.
  • Treat them otherwise as clerics. following the rules for their divinity with regards to allowed armor, allowed weapons, magical side-effects, and tests, but they cannot turn nor use a cleric’s mysteries.
